As homeowners, we understand that not every day brings sunshine and calm weather. When severe weather hits, it can cause unexpected damage, including fallen trees. Be prepared!

This guide offers essential advice every homeowner should know in case a tree falls or breaks, damaging their home.

Understand Your Insurance Coverages and Limits

Take a moment to review the coverage limits on your policy’s summary page:

  • Dwelling A: Covers your home—the structure that shelters you and keeps you safe/warm.

  • Other Structures: Garages, fences, sidewalks, and possibly landscaping features like retaining walls.

  • Personal Property:  Valuable items inside your home.

Each of these coverages has limits, representing the maximum payout you can receive for covered losses.

Key Steps to Take After Damage

If a tree damages your home, you’ll need to act quickly. Before contacting your insurance company or agent, here are important things to know:

Tall tree with broken branches near a red brick house. A wooden fence with a damaged section, patio furniture, and a blue covered object. Cloudy sky.

  1. Wind/Hail Deductible
    • Your deductible determines how much you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in.

    • Some policies have a fixed deductible (e.g., $500–$1,500).

    • Others use a percentage of your dwelling’s value—this can result in a higher deductible, increasing your financial burden.

  2. Dwelling A Coverage
    • Make sure your coverage is sufficient to rebuild or repair your home if it’s destroyed.

  1. Other Structures Coverage
    • Check whether your policy provides enough coverage for garages, fences, driveways, or other structures on your property.

If you’re concerned your coverage or deductible leaves you exposed, contact your insurance agent to adjust your policy.

Example Scenario

A tree falls on your home due to a windstorm. In this case, you can file a claim to cover the cost of tree removal and home repairs.

    • Tree Removal: $10,000

    • Home Repairs: $10,000

    • Total Claim: $20,000

If your wind/hail deductible is $1,000, your insurance will pay $19,000, and you’ll cover the remaining $1,000.

Hire Qualified Contractors

It’s critical to hire licensed and insured contractors you can trust. Reputable contractors will not only perform quality repairs, but also help you manage the insurance claim process smoothly and efficiently.

With the right insurance coverage and professional help, you’re entitled to have your home or structure restored to its original condition—or better—before the damage occurred.
